Y5’s Bushcraft Adventure – Darwin’s Dragons Style!

This week, Y5 brought Darwin’s Dragons by Lindsay Galvin to life in their Bushcraft session! Set in Victorian times, the book follows Syms Covington, a character who gets stranded on one of the Galapagos Islands. But instead of just reading about his adventure, the children had to become Syms!

In an exciting escape room-style challenge, the children:
Located supplies hidden around the outdoor classroom, washed ashore from the shipwreck
Raced against the clock to complete tasks to “survive,” including:

  • Building shelter

  • Starting a fire (One group even succeeded using the sun and a spyglass, just like Syms in the book!)

  • Catching food with a spear (marshmallows!)

  • Whittling tools

  • Creating a rescue signal

  • Boiling water

To tie in even more with the book, the children had to hide from a dragon that appeared at inopportune moments and avoid a lava flow.

The best part? The children rose to the challenge and excelled! Every group successfully “escaped” the island and got to enjoy their marshmallows around the fire as a well-earned reward.

What an adventure! Thank you so much Mr King and well done, Y5!
